CALL FOR ARTISTS

Overview: The City of Stone Mountain, Main Street Stone
Mountain and ART Station seeks to commission an artist or artist team to design
and execute a sculptural public art work to be installed permanetly on Main
Street in Stone Mountain Village. The art work will be placed in the center
island area of the pedestrian crosswalk in the Historic Village of Stone
Mountain located in the City of Stone Mountain, Georgia.
Project Budget: The project budget shall not exceed
$12,000. This budget includes the construction cost as well as the fee to the
artist/artist team. This commission budget includes all costs associated with
the project: design, fabrication, construction, delivery and installation,
engineering and insurance. At least 50% of the budget must be used for the
actual construction of the art work.
Eligibility: Limited to artists/artists teams that reside
and work in the state of Georgia.
Note: The selected artist(s) will be responsible for
providing engineer stamped drawings for the construction, installation and load
rating specifications for the project prior to fabrication.
Concept/Theme: The theme of the art to be commissioned
shall be based in a positive historical context as it relates to the history of
the Village of Stone Mountain. The City of Stone Mountain’s history is based
upon the granite industry, tourism, and transportation as it relates to its
trolley car line and power generating station in which ART Station is housed
today.

Examples of possible inspirations to the concept are:
- The men who quarried the mountain beginning in 1848 and
supplied granite not only to the local area but to buildings around the
world. Information for research may be found at the Granite Museum at Stone
Mountain Park.
- The Trolley Car Station and the actual Trolley Cars,
which plied the streets of Stone Mountain to Atlanta beginning in 1913.
Information regarding the Trolley Cars may be found at ART Station and in the
book “Mule to MARTA” Volume I and II.
- Or other historic themes deemed by the artist(s) from
their own research.

Artwork Specifications: The artwork may not exceed 16 feet
in height. It may not exceed five feet in width or twenty feet in length
including the base of the art work.
Proposals: Proposal packages must follow specific
guidelines and should consist of the following information:
- Letter of Intent: The letter should describe the
artist(s) interest in the concept/theme, a description of previous art work
which may be similar in style, and a willingness to design and complete the
project within the calendar presented in this prospectus.
- Resume: Include resume of all public art projects or
general art works.
- Photos of Previous Public Art Works: Submit 5 digital
images of previous work or related projects (JPEGS) of recent artworks (not to
exceed 1024 x 768 pixels at a minimum of 150 dpi provided on disk or uploaded)
accompanied by a sheet with description of each work sample. Each sample
should note medium, size of work, and date of completion.
- Concept: Artist must submit a concept drawing of the
proposed project with an artist’s statement regarding the concept of the
historic nature of the project as it relates to the history of the City of
Stone Mountain. Artists may submit preliminary sketches, tracing, photo or
digital composites of the proposed artwork in scale with the installation
site. All materials are to be submitted on 8 ½ by 11 inch pages.
Artists must agree to the following timeline for the
project.

References: Applicants must submit the name, address and
phone number of 3 references from previous projects.
Please Note: The selected artist/artist team will enter
into a contract with the City of Stone Mountain and Main Street Stone Mountain,
Inc. The contract will include the following:
- Artist must provide a detailed budget for the art work’s
construction.
- Artist must provide general liability insurance for the
period of the construction of the art work.
- Title and Ownership: The artist retains all rights and
interest in the artwork except for rights of ownership and possession, which
are passed to the City of Stone Mountain upon final acceptance of the art
work. The artist warrants that the artwork is his/her sole and original
creation, does not infringe upon any copyright, or trademark, and has not been
offered elsewhere.
- Reproduction Rights/Copyright: Artist retains all
rights under the Copyright Act of 1976. However, the artist aggress not to
make an exact duplicate or permit others to do so, except by written
permission of the City of Stone Mountain, the artist also grants the City of
Stone Mountain the irrevocable license to make two-dimensional reproductions
for promotional purses. In turn, the City of Stone Mountain agrees to give
the artist the appropriate credit on all such promotional pieces. The credit
will include the copyright symbol, name of the artist, title of the piece, and
date of completion.
- Warranties/Risk of Loss: Artist warrants that: a) the
artwork is made of quality materials, b) the artwork is free of defects; and
c) the artwork will remain in good condition for 15 years under normal
conditions with routine maintenance.
- Fabrication and Installation: a) artwork is free from
defect, b) artwork is made of high quality materials, c) craftsmanship is of
high quality.
- Artist will provide a maintenance requirement and
guidelines for art work to the City of Stone Mountain.
